Mount Lilydale Mercy College draws deeply on Gospel values and the spirit of Mercy, as established by Catherine McAuley, to develop a program of Pastoral Care for the students of our College.

This program has its basis in our Mission Statement which calls for nurturing 'self-esteem by promoting respect for each person's uniqueness, dignity and worth' in a community 'that provides spiritual, emotional, social and intellectual assistance to each of its members.'

The Homeroom Teacher is the key contact person for the student in this Pastoral Care relationship. Pastoral Care is the spirit that underpins and permeates the everyday relationships in our school. We believe that it is important for students to be connected with key staff and with each other. For this reason, students usually remain in the same Homeroom group with the same teacher for several years with that teacher teaching the group for at least one subject.

In Years 8, 9 & 10 one of the Level Coordinators also moves with the group to provide pastoral support to them. Year 7 is regarded as a special transition year and each Homeroom teacher will normally teach the group for more than one subject and another 'significant teacher' will also normally teach the group for more than one subject. Staff at the College seek to affirm and support each student particularly through measures such as:

  • College Colours program
  • Awards Ceremonies
  • Peer Support program
  • Year 7 Transition
  • Orientation Camps
  • Student Leadership structure
  • Retreats
  • Support for co-curricula activities.
