Years 11 & 12 Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

Mount Lilydale Mercy College introduced VCAL, the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning, in 2004.

The VCAL Intermediate program requires students to undertake core VCAL strand classes at the College on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

  • Literacy Skills Strand
  • Numeracy Skills Strand
  • Personal Development and Work Related Skills Strands
  • Religious Education and Homeroom Pastoral Care

On Wednesday’s student’s complete Vocational Education Training courses or School Based New Apprenticeships, and on Thursdays students undertake documented workplace training or work experience. This constitutes their Industry specific skills strand. This holistic program enables students to be engaged in areas of interest to them whilst developing and refining essential skills for employment, further study and community life. Students who successfully meet the requirements of VCAL will receive both the VCAL Intermediate Certificate and a Certificate in their selected Industry based skills course.

Where appropriate, team teaching and negotiated curriculum delivery with students will occur. Integrated strand based delivery is a special focus to the program.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

VET in schools program, undertaken in conjunction with either VCAL or the VCE, offers increased options to students to gain access to further training, education and/or work.

Religious Education Program

Mount Lilydale Mercy College attempts to provide a holistic education for the students through the Religious Education Program. The Program aims to provide understanding, skills, attitudes and values within a comprehensive curriculum framework as well as providing opportunities for the expression of faith through prayer, liturgies, Eucharist, Reconciliation and retreats. Another focus is giving of time, energy and talents to support the disadvantaged in our local, national and international communities.

Inter School Sport Program

Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of inter school sports. The school is a member of the Eastern Independent Schools of Melbourne. Students regularly compete in athletics, cross-country and swimming at state levels. They may also participate in basketball, football, netball, golf, canoeing and weightlifting. We have recently become involved in equestrian at an inter school level.
